Sie versorgt Menschen, die in armen, oft kriegsgebeutelten Ländern leben, Sierra Leone und Liberia sind darunter. Wren blickt auf die 13 Jahre zurück, die gerade hinter ihr liegen und denkt dabei an Wegbegleiter wie ihre alte Freundin Ellen an Dr. Farber und Dr. Love der sich der Gruppe freiwilliger Helfer anschließt, nachdem seine Frau gestorben ist. Vor allem aber denkt Wren an den Kollegen Miguel. Sie traf ihn in Monrovia, der Hauptstadt Liberias, wo Miguel der Held des Hospitals im Flüchtlingscamp war und sich unermüdlich um die Verwundeten kümmerte. Bald arbeiteten beide zusammen, kümmerten sich um die Hungernden und Kriegsversehrten Afrikas und versuchten, eine Beziehung zu führen…
